Round Up: Champions League

🔵 Inter Milan v Tottenham Hotspur

🥅 Score: Inter 2-1 Tottenham

📕 Match Stats:

Goals: Christian Eriksen (TOT) 53’, Mauro Icardi (INT) 85’, Matias Vecino (INT) 90+2’

Possession: Tottenham 54%, Inter Milan 46%

Shots: Tottenham 11, Inter Milan, 15

How It happened: After a troubling start to the Serie A season and going behind to Spurs 1-0, club captain Mauro Icardi decided enough was enough and powered a beautiful volley from outside the box to equalise in the 85th minute. In extra time, Matias Vecino headed home the winner on a corner kick sending the San Siro into chaos. Christian Eriksen scored the only goal for Tottenham, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a third consecutive defeat - the first time it has happened under Mauricio Pochettino.

🗣️ JAFA User Comment of the Match:  @pochwatch “This is nothing like when we played them in 2010. Back then they were treble winners and European champs and we were in our first CL season – now they’ve been out of the European elite for a few years now and we should really be beating them”

🔴 Liverpool v PSG 🇫🇷

🥅 Score: Liverpool 3-2 PSG

📕 Match Stats:

Goals: Daniel Sturridge (LIV) 30’, James Milner-Pen (LIV) 34’, Thomas Meunier (PSG) 40’, Kylian Mbappé (PSG) 83’, Roberto Firmino (LIV) 90+1’

Possession: Liverpool 52%, PSG 48%

Shots: Liverpool 17, PSG 9

How It happened: It was a classic European night at Anfield as Liverpool beat PSG 3-2 thanks to a late winner by Roberto Firmnio. Liverpool started off the game strong and led 2-0 within 34 minutes thanks to Sturridge and Milner, however the deficit was halved by Thomas Meunier who made it 2-1 before halftime. The hosts completely outplayed PSG, but the uncharacteristically quiet Neymar and Mbappe linked up to shock Anfield and equalise in the 83rd minute. Just as it looked like the teams would share the spoils, Roberto Firmino cut inside and expertly slipped it in the bottom corner to send Anfield wild.

🗣️ JAFA User Comment of the Match: Pre-match - @SalahisBae “This is what the champions league is all about, playing teams like this at Anfield. Get the feeling Neymar and Mbappe won’t be used to this atmosphere.”

🔵 Manchester City v Lyon 🇫🇷

🥅 Score: Lyon 2-1 Man City

📕 Match Stats:

Goals: Maxwel Cornet (LYN) 26’, Nabil Fekir (LYN) 43’, Brenardo Silva (MCI) 67’

Possession: Manchester City 70%, Lyon 30%

Shots: Manchester City 22, Lyon 11

How It happened: With Pep Guardiola watching from the stands, Man City did not have their ideal start to the campaign as the Champions League favorites lost at the Etihad 2-1 to Lyon. City dominated possession but failed to convert any of their 22 shots. Cornet and Fekir combined to give Lyon a 2-0 halftime lead. Bernardo Silva have City a glimpse of hope in the 67th but it was short lived as Lyon hung onto the lead. This loss leaves City less room for error moving forward in the group.

🗣️ JAFA User Comment of the Match: Pre-match- @mcfc4life “Not much to be worried of here is there? That flashy united reject Memphis and Fekir but surly we’ll overpower them”

🇨🇭 Young Boys v Manchester United 🔴

🥅 Score: Manchester United 3-0 Young Boys

📕 Match Stats:

Goals: Paul Pogba (UTD) 35’, 44’, Anthony Martial (UTD) 66’

Possession: Man Utd 56%, Young Boys 44%

Shots: Man Utd 16, Young Boys 18

How It happened: A Paul Pogba masterclass helped Man Utd to a win over the Swiss champions. The Frenchman scored two, and timed his pass to perfection to assist Martial, who got his first goal since January. Jose Mourinho praised his squad’s ruthlessness after halftime for finishing out the game strong on an artificial pitch, an unfamiliar surface from the premier league professionals.

🗣️ JAFA User Comment of the Match: Pre-match - @danb “3-0 Utd – Lukaku to put on a show. Exciting Martial and Rashford both playing too from the start”
